Salty Sea Dog Blues - composed & performed by Nathan Britton
Mcasso partnered with design studio Otherway on a collaboration resulting in sixteen unique compositions to transform a Fortnum & Mason chocolate collection.
Otherway’s concept was for each chocolate bar in the range to have its own soundtrack - an original musical score, turning tasting into a multi-sensory performance.
The Mcasso production team worked closely with Otherway on all aspects of the music, from notation & score design, to establishing the most suitable styles for each of the sixteen pieces.
Our composing team, led by Nathan Britton and Jasmine Meaden, created original piano pieces that mirror the rhythm, texture and emotional journey of tasting, from first bite to final note.
The piano was the natural choice for this project. As a solo instrument, it is uniquely self-sufficient, capable of carrying both a rich harmonic foundation and melody simultaneously. Beyond its musical versatility, the piano is accessible - found in homes, schools, and communal spaces everywhere - making the music as playable as possible.
My Sweet Honeycomb Queen - composed & performed by Jasmine Meadon
Bringing this to life posed a deceptively simple challenge. These were miniature compositions, designed to sit on a score no larger than the chocolate bar itself. Within that limited space, the music needed to feel complete and expressive, adding depth to the illustrations and flavour stories rather than simply accompanying them.
The scores were illustrated on pack and interpreted through expressive artwork by Victoria Semykina. When opened, each bar reveals its full composition, inviting customers to play, listen or simply experience the music as they taste the chocolate. Across the collection, sixteen unique compositions transform the range into a library of edible performances.
Meet Me In The Milky Way - composed & performed by Nathan Britton
‘Bars of Chocolate’ delivered a +62% increase in sales versus the previous design while the new flavours delivered +146% vs de-listed options in the range, showing that the multi-sensory approach resonated commercially as well as creatively.
Mcasso's Managing Director Tom Martin said "We were excited to be a part of such a unique collaboration - working with Otherway, a forward thinking design agency, and Fortnum & Mason, a heritage British brand."
"This was a comprehensive, complex project requiring a thorough understanding of music creation across both written and recorded elements. It was a pleasure for music to be right at the forefront of the campaign and we hope the collaboration brings fun and enjoyment to chocolate and music lovers around the world."
